Open house at Lab Schools

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools offer exceptional opportunities for students in Nursery (age 3 by Aug. 1) through 12th grades. Interested families can learn about the Schools at an open house 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

The Schools were founded by educational philosopher John Dewey, who believed that children learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. That tradition remains an important part of teaching and learning at the Lab Schools, where students are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills, discover connections between subjects and disciplines, become confident learners, and grow to realize the responsibilities of belonging to a community. Nearly a third of the Senior Class has received finalist, semi-finalist, or commended recognition from the National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholars programs. The Schools have recently completed both a new athletic complex—including a new gymnasium—and new science laboratories in the high school. The Laboratory Schools remain committed to reflecting the racial, economic and geographic diversity of the greater Chicago area, drawing students from a wide variety of city neighborhoods and suburbs throughout the region.
