U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin will be joining Metropolitan Planning Council's roundtable breakfast, SAFETEA Begins at Home: Greasing the Wheels for Full Funding, on Oct. 31. Interested parties should register for this event in advance as it is likely to sell out.
The recent passage of the federal transportation bill — Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users, or SAFETEA-LU — was a big win for Illinois' highway, transit and rail networks, increasing annual funding by more than $300 million over the last bill. Now the task of matching these funds with a new capital investment program falls to the state leaders. The expert panel will give an overview of SAFETEA-LU and highlight the areas where Illinois outshined many other states. In addition, they will address the public and private strategies needed so that no dollar is stranded in Washington, and discuss innovative models from around the country and world.
The moderator will be MarySue Barrett, Metropolitan Planning Council. The panelists will be Sen. Richard J. Durbin; Timothy W. Martin, Illinois Department of Transportation; Paul Nowicki, BNSF Railway Company; James R. Reilly, Regional Transportation Authority; William Spurr, Bombardier Transportation, North America. The event takes place at Union League Club of Chicago, 65 W. Jackson Blvd., 5th floor (Crystal Room). Please note the Union League Club requires business casual attire for all guests. The time is 8 to 9:30 a.m. (Event check-in is at 7:45 a.m.) Breakfast will be provided.
The cost for the roundtable is $15 for MPC donors and $30 for all others. Members of the Union League Club may register for this roundtable at the $15 rate through the Club's Public Affairs Office by calling (312) 435-5946 or by e-mailing Pat Summers.
To register, call Pam Lee at (312) 863-6011 and leave your name, organization name, phone number, and credit card information. Cancellations must be received 48 hours in advance to prevent being charged.
