Volunteers from Tree House Animal Foundation, a no-kill, cageless shelter for injured, abandoned and abused stray cats, aided in Hurricane Katrina animal relief efforts this past week. Three Tree House volunteers traveled to Bogalusa, LA, and scoured the area, looking to help the thousands of abandoned animals left alone after the storm. The volunteers rescued cats displaced by the hurricane and brought them back to Tree House for adoption.
Tree House Animal Foundation, along with Alley Cat Allies, an organization promoting non-lethal control for feral and stray cats through trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, spent a week at a makeshift shelter in Bogalusa, 70 miles north of New Orleans, that houses 100-120 homeless cats that are stray, abandoned or waiting to be united with their owners. The shelter will care for all unclaimed cats until Dec. 31, when they will be released for adoption.
"Volunteers are desperately needed and will be needed through the end of the year," said Elizabeth Frick, Volunteer Coordinator at Tree House Animal Foundation. "Animals are still being rescued everyday."
The cats that Tree House rescued include a small, brown tabby male that was found protecting two orphaned kittens (who were also rescued), an FIV+ orange, tabby male with a crinkled ear, and two shy and scared kittens. All of the cats rescued by Tree House were confirmed as not having owners.
