Seniors to enjoy 'The Master Painter'

"The Head of Christ"
by Warner Sallman

The most familiar and popular painting of Jesus Christ is the one which was painted by Warner E. Sallman in 1940, and titled "The Head of Christ." This image and others are part of the Warner E. Sallman Art Collection, Inc., and will be featured at a presentation to be held on Friday, Nov. 18, in the Fellowship Hall at the Ravenswood Covenant Church, 4900 N. Damen Ave., sponsored by the Ravenswood Covenant Seniors and 50-plus Seniors. The event begins with a meal at 11 a.m. and the program follows at noon.
A video presentation, “The Master Painter,” will be given by the Rev. LeRoy L. Carlson, who is the founder and president of the collection. This inspirational program will include the story of Sallman’s life, the story of "The Head of Christ," and over 45 of his other popular works of art.
"The Head of Christ," which is his best-known image, was painted in Sallman's studio in Chicago, and has now been reproduced around the world over 500 million times. Sallman is also famous for his depiction of "Christ at Heart’s Door," which is Jesus knocking at the door; "Christ in Gethsemane," which is Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to his crucifixion; "The Lord is My Shepherd," and many other religious and secular paintings.
Sallman was born in 1892 and died in 1968. A commercial artist, he painted over 500 original pieces. During the World War II the servicemen were given a copy of "The Head of Christ" as they went off to serve their country. In 1999, Dr. Jack Lundbom wrote a book entitled "Master Painter," available at the Covenant Bookstore in Chicago.
This event is open to the public. For more information, contact Mary Smith, Director of the Seniors Group, at
