LAWSUIT OVER FALSE STATEMENTS SETTLED
Ald. Gene Schulter (47th) accepted an apology from publishers of a newsletter and Web site that had defamed his character and made untrue statements about him. This was mediated and settled by his attorneys, Robert W. Fioretti and John Lower. In addition to the apology, the three defendants will make a $1,000 donation to a food pantry in Schulter's name.
"Criticism of elected officials is a protected right, but when statements are made that are untrue and meant only to harm, then it crosses the line of fair play," said Schulter. "I'm glad that the settlement of this case will benefit the community through the donation to the food pantry."
"We are glad that this case was settled through mediation. The defendants realized that a mistake was made and now through the apology and donation, the issue has been resolved," said Fioretti. "Politics has become a rough and tumble battleground. Untrue attacks on character and integrity will not be tolerated. Ald. Schulter has an unblemished, 30-year-long record of service to his community. He and his family look forward to many more years of service to our city." |
