Carlos Gomez of the Foundation for Human Rights in Guatemala will speak on "The State of Human Rights in Guatemala Today" in the final MayaNights lecture at Saint Luke Church, 1500 W. Belmont Ave., on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m.
The programs are offered in conjunction with the exhibition, running through Dec. 4, of "Mayan Procession," a series of life-size paintings showing the Highland Maya of Guatemala in native dress by Chicago artist Winifred Godfrey. Also on display are Mayan textiles and costumes from the collection of William Goldman.
In extended gallery hours preceding the lecture (4-7 p.m.), textiles and beadwork from the Highlands of Guatemala will be available for purchase through MayaWorks, a Chicago based Fair Trade non-profit organization that supports the economic development of Maya artisans by marketing their hand work.
Both admission and parking are free. For more information, call (773) 472-3383. |
