The Chicago Historical Society is currently undergoing a $27.5 million renovation to the museum that will be unveiled to the public next fall in conjunction with its 150th anniversary. In this current phase of the renovation, all exhibition galleries will temporarily be closed to the public. These closures will be effective Dec. 5, 2005. The Big Shoulders Café has also been closed due to construction.
The museum is not closing its doors, as it will still accommodate visitors and scholars to the Research Center and Museum Store, as well as continue its bus, el and walking tours that span the city. "CHS will continue to serve as an authoritative resource for Chicago history research and education, and is building on 150 years of history to create new galleries with engaging exhibitions and something for the whole family," said Gary T. Johnson, CHS President.
The Research Center will remain open throughout the renovation. It is strongly recommended that anyone planning to use the Research Center call prior to arriving, as dates and times of operation may vary, as well as access to collection items. CHS will continue to maintain the Web site www.chicagohistory.org, which offers additional resources, such as the electronic Encyclopedia of Chicago, the Daily News Collection, and Archie, a catalog of Research Center collections.
Renovation plans include an increase in existing gallery space providing greater access to historic artifacts and documents. The new galleries will allow visitors to experience a new Children's Gallery, which will engage children in learning about Chicago through their five senses; a new Costume Gallery, which will present selections from one of the nation's most extensive historical clothing collections; and a completely redesigned lobby and event space, which will allow visitors to view treasures from the collection.
The Chicago Historical Society, a major museum and research center for Chicago and American history, is located on Clark St. at North Ave. Suggested admission is $5 for adults; $3 for seniors and students; $1 for children; free for members and children under the age of 6 .For more information, call (312) 642-4600. |
