Hidden gems in our neighborhood

Next time you are in the Lincoln Square neighborhood, take time to look at the Thomas Jefferson Pumping Station located on the north side of Eastwood Ave., just east of Lincoln Ave. It is a stunning red brick building with beautiful ornate white trim. There is a wonderful image of Thomas Jefferson at the top of the former main entrance with a blue background, and Jefferson’s bust, surrounding flags, and lettering are done in what looks like antique brass. As the name implies, the building houses water pumping units for the Town of Jefferson. Though located on the Western edge of Lake View Township, the pumping station was built in 1928 during the final mayoral term of Big Bill “The Builder” Thompson, whose name appears on a bill board announcing the work in progress that is on the City’s Web site.
Thanks to Dick Bjorklund, neighborhood historian, for the above information.
