Crashing down
Around 8 a.m. Sunday, a building at 1456 N. Dearborn St. partially collapsed. No one was injured. The U-shaped structure, at one time a hotel, had been vacant for 10 years. It was under rehab, but it had been issued three Stop Work orders since 1997. The immediate cause of the collapse appeared to be a water main break which washed out a wall, permitting the structure to give way.
The pictures above show the damage to the left portion of the building; in the background is the right wing which was untouched. The white vehicle is one of two crushed by debris in the collapse. Both smashed vehicles were owned by the building's owner. |
