EarthSave Chicago plans potlucks, speakers in Lincoln Park

EarthSave Chicago holds monthly vegan potluck dinners, with speakers and open to the public, from 5 to 7 p.m. the fourth Sunday of each month at Resurrection Lutheran School, RAP Classroom, 1050 W. School St. The potlucks are part of EarthSave Chicago's initiative to promote a shift toward a diet that is healthier for people, animals and the planet. Representatives from four different local non-profit organizations will discuss how cruelty-free practices fit into their business models.
On Jan. 22, hear about "The Big Three of Fair Trade." Nancy Jones from the Chicago Committee on Fair Trade (www.chicagofairtrade.org) will speak from a fair-trade perspective on the "Big Three" associated with Valentine's Day: chocolate, flowers and diamonds.
On Feb. 26, the topic is "Boxes of Local Produce—Year-Round." Erika Allen of Growing Power will demonstrate how the organization's youth development initiative builds self-sufficiency and a love of nature and community, while delivering organic produce directly to the homes of hundreds of Chicagoans throughout the year in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes.
March 26 will feature "Pastries and Politics." Michelle Garcia of the Bleeding Heart Bakery will show how using organic and sustainable ingredients not only produces satisfying vegan baked goods, but also fulfills the bakery's mission to provide opportunities for children and untrained local workers.
On April 23, hear about "Know Your Food. Know Your Farmer." Carolyn Zezima of Green City Market will discuss how Chicago's only sustainable farmers' market supports small family farms and promotes a healthier society through education and an appreciation for local produce and products.
"While sampling vegan food, people can learn about four animal-friendly organizations doing good things in the Chicago area," said EarthSave Chicago Chair Chris Brunn.
Attendees must bring a place setting, a serving utensil and a vegan dish (no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, honey, or animal derivatives) that serves eight people. Vegan desserts are always appreciated.
Members are free. For nonmembers, a $5 donation is requested; for students, $2. Registration is not required. Everyone is encouraged to walk, ride a bike or take transit, as parking is limited. For more information, visit www.earthsavechicago.com.
