Saint Joseph Hospital physician receives Humanitarian Award

James Sullivan, M.D., Infectious Disease specialist at Saint Joseph Hospital, 2900 N. Lake Shore Dr., was presented with the hospital's first Humanitarian Award at an Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Dr. Sullivan was in New Orleans attending an HIV symposium when Hurricane Katrina struck on Aug. 29. He was recognized for his significant contributions during the disaster.
To help with recovery efforts, Dr. Sullivan and other physicians attending the symposium established an infirmary at the hotel where they were staying. They treated hotel guests, workers and their families for anxiety, dehydration, hypoglycemia and diarrhea among other health concerns for four days before they were evacuated.
