Forgivable loans are available to low-income homeowners to address dangerous, hazardous, or life-threatening conditions in single family properties (one- to four-units). Department of Housing staff will inspect the heating unit and a licensed heating contractor will perform the needed repairs or replacement. The heating emergency program is available from Nov. 1, 2001-March 31, 2002. Please note that heating emergency help is limited to homes that have not received prior assistance. Program guidelines state that applicants must be owner-occupants, and reside in the property for at least one year before applying for assistance. Applicants must also fall within the following income limits per number of people in household: |
One, $24,700
Two, $28,200
Three, $31,750
Four, $35,250
Five, $38,050
Six, $40,900
Seven, $43,700
Eight or more, $46,550 Maximum loan amount for 1-2 units is up to $8,500; for 3-4 units up to $10,000 |
If the necessary repairs exceed the loan limits, the homeowner will have the option of remaining in the program but will be responsible for paying the difference before work can begin. A list of the documents needed to complete an application follows. Call the Department of Housing, Consumer Service Unit at (312) 747-9000 for more details on applying for assistance. To complete an application, homeowners will need to provide copies of the following documents: Proof of ownership: Recorded deed (warranty or quit claim); death certificate (where applicable); mortgage payment book (if applicable); current property tax bill; homeowner’s insurance. Proof of income (income for all co-owners and members of the household must be included): Last two paycheck stubs; most recent federal tax returns; benefits verification (e.g., social security, pension, public aid, etc.); rent receipts (if applicable). Utilities: Current gas bill; current electric bill; current water bill. Proof of residency: Driver’s license or state ID card; name and social security numbers for all household members. |
