Applications for arts grants

Individual artists and nonprofit arts organizations in all disciplines can apply now for grants of up to $1,000 through the Community Arts Assistance Program (CAAP) for the year 2002 for professional, artistic, and organizational development projects. Applications are being distributed by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., fourth floor, and 33 other locations throughout the city. Two application assistance workshops are scheduled on the North Side. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. For more information, call (312) 744-1742 or (312) 744-6630, or visit www.cityofchicago.org/CulturalAffairs/.

“I encourage all eligible Chicago artists and arts organizations to think about what they need to establish themselves to grow and to apply for this grant in order that we may continue to develop and nourish a diverse and thriving Chicago arts community,” said Chicago Cultural Affairs Commissioner Lois Weisberg.

“This grant program offers financial support for such expenses as portfolio development, obtaining 501c3 status, attending professional development seminars, and numerous other types of specific needs,” added Mary Young, deputy commissioner of cultural grants for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

New, emerging, and mid-career artists, and nonprofit arts organizations of all disciplines with annual operating budgets of $100,000 or less, are eligible to apply. Individuals must be residents of Chicago for at least six months prior to the application deadline. Organizations must be located in and serving the city of Chicago; incorporated, or in the process of, or requesting funds for incorporation; and have a valid Federal Employer Identification Number.

All new and repeat CAAP applicants are strongly encouraged to attend a two hour workshop at either of the following locations (no RSVP necessary):

Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 3:30 p.m. Arts Bridge, 2936 N. Southport Ave., suite 210

Thursday, Nov. 8, at 5:30 p.m. Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., fifth floor

The Community Arts Assistance Program is an annual grant opportunity funded through the Access Program of the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The goals of CAAP are to discover, nurture, and expand Chicago’s multi-ethnic artists and non-profit arts organizations, and to foster new and emerging individual artists and arts groups. Funding priority is intended for “new” artists and organizations and those who have had limited access to traditional funding in both public and private arts programs.
