First Shakespearean work at Goodman in 10 years

Goodman Theatre Manilow Resident Director Mary Zimmerman mounts her shimmering revival of William Shakespeare's "Pericles," one of the Bard's later romance-comedies that is seldom performed. Enjoy the mythical voyage of a hero who sets sail for great adventure, defeats monsters along the way and returns home for a joyous reunion, in Goodman's Albert Theatre through Feb. 12.
The play begins in Antioch where Pericles, the Prince of Tyre, must solve a riddle to gain the princess' hand. But when he uncovers its dark meaning, Pericles is cast out to sea. What follows is a mythical journey across the ocean in which love is found then torn away, beauty and virtue are challenged then rewarded. Ultimately, the sorely tested hero regains all that is lost in one of the most beautiful and moving theatrical moments of all time.
"Most of the plays I've done in Shakespeare have been the neglected children," said Zimmerman. "I think this play is obviously full of oddnesses and quirkinesses and I adore those. I think they open up little spaces for the cast, director, designers and composer to create beautiful and imaginative things. Storms at sea, pirates, riddles, parades of knights—I find this play very much a box of delights."
