Aggravated assault with gun
According to police reports, two men driving a newspaper delivery route were fired upon by an unknown white male at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3. The workers were stopped at a light at Damen and Diversey avenues when the offender came from behind, ran up to a spot five feet from the van, and fired his .45 semi-automatic blue steel weapon. Several rounds penetrated the van, and two went through the driver's clothing. The workers drove away, finished their route, and then came into District 19 to file a report, bringing four spent rounds with them. Police searched courtyards, grounds and sidewalks at the scene of the shooting for casings, damage, or injured persons and found none.
Party puncher
A New Year's Eve party involved fighting and led to the arrest of two men in the 3000 block of N. Lincoln Ave. At 1:04 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, police were flagged down. Two victims related that they were at the party when a verbal altercation began. The first offender struck the first victim with a fist in the face and head causing several lacerations, and also used a chair to strike him in the neck and chest. The same offender then struck the second victim in the eye, causing redness and swelling to her eye. CFD #7 arrived and transported the first victim to Illinois Masonic Hospital.
As officers were preparing to depart with offender #1, a second partygoer began a verbal altercation with the police, and then struck an officer in the neck and face with his fist. The second offender was also taken into custody. The court date for both is 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in Br. 29-2.
Hitting with bottle
After drinking, a man was walking in the 2900 block of N. Lincoln Ave. at 3:35 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1. Someone ran up from behind and struck him on the top of the head with a glass bottle. The offender then jumped into a dark auto and fled.
Happy new year
On Jan. 1, a Lake View woman noticed her wallet was missing from her purse, and then found out several charges had been made on her credit cards. The cards had been used to purchase goods for $500, $600, and $60.
You're a winner—not
A Lincoln Park man received a letter stating that he had won the lottery in Canada. He was instructed to send a check for the taxes in order to receive his winnings. The victim then sent a Western Union electronic check for $4,500, and that is the last he’s heard from them.
ATM hassle
According to police reports, a Lake View woman checked her ATM transactions online and discovered a discrepancy of $448.98. She consulted her bank and learned another $906 was also missing. No one else had her card or permission to use her account.
Stealing credit cards from mailbox
At 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, police caught a suspect with stolen property. They were patrolling an area with a high incidence of burglaries when they saw two persons looking into yards and gangways in the 1000 block of W. Montana St. They conducted a street stop of one man as the other ran from the scene. A protective pat-down revealed that the offender was in possession of a sealed envelope addressed to a resident of the block and containing two credit cards issued by Citibank. The Postal Inspector plans to attend the court hearing on Feb. 15 in Br. 29.
Deceptive practice
A Virginia resident called a medical office in Lincoln Park on Wednesday, Jan. 4, and gave her credit card number to an employee there. Shortly afterward, she received a call from Sony regarding a $3,000 computer that she had supposedly ordered on that card. She contacted the medical office, which then identified the offender.
'Lost' man robs two
Two men were parking their car at 4:08 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, in the 2500 block of N. Orchard St. when they were approached by a man on foot. “Do you know what street this is? I’m lost,” he said. He then displayed a light green towel over his hand and said, “Don’t make me shoot you.” The victims surrendered all their cash ($102) and were made to get out of the car and walk the opposite direction. “If you turn around, I’ll shoot,” the offender said, then fled in a dark-colored car.
BMW vanishes
At 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, a man parked his vehicle in the 2500 block of W. Carmen Ave. to visit a coffee shop. He returned to the spot at 5 p.m. to discover it missing. The car was a gray 2002 BMW SUV, with Illinois plate 4712402. The driver had locked the ignition and the doors and had removed the keys.
Axe of folly
In Dominick's, 5235 N. Sheridan Rd., a shoplifter was apprehended at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7. He had been observed taking six Axe body deodorants from the shelf and placing them in the sleeves of his coat, then passing the last point of sale without purchasing the items. The total value was less than $33.
Push up, climb in
An unlocked kitchen window in the 5000 block of N. Hermitage Ave. was the point of entry for a burglar on Thursday, Jan. 5. Taken were three gold rings, two watches, and a digital camera.
Returning traveler finds trouble
In the 4800 block of N. Hermitage Ave., a resident returned on Thursday, Jan. 5, from a two week vacation to find his door forced open and his apartment burglarized. Taken were one diamond ring ($1,500), 100 DVDs ($2,000), eight PlayStation games ($400), $20 in change, and a suitcase ($80). He found out that his neighbor had been burglarized Dec. 28; a black towel and a broach belonging to her were found in his apartment. An evidence technician dusted the door glass and miscellaneous electronic items for fingerprints.
Kindness not rewarded
An 85-year-old woman had her purse snatched at a bus stop in the 4900 block of N. Sheridan Rd. at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4. A female offender approached her and asked for bus fare. When the victim took out her coin purse, the offender snatched it and ran. A witness pursued the offender who then dropped the coin purse—but not before removing $120 from it.
Quick work
A driver parked a '94 Saturn in the 5700 block of N. Kenmore Ave. at 7: 15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4. Within 30 minutes the car was stolen. The driver failed to lock the doors and may have left a key in the console. The navy blue car had Illinois plates of 6762790.
Burglary at Ollie's
Someone broke into Ollie's Bar, 1064 W. Berwyn Ave., overnight Jan. 3-4. The front window was completely shattered. Inside, a cigarette machine was broken with $1,337 in cigarettes missing. Also taken was candy ($13), loose change from the register ($12), 100 scratch-off lottery tickets ($100), cash from the office ($65), a notary public stamp, four bottles of gin and a half pint of Courvoisier ($65 total).
The steel safe was found opened with no visible pry marks, and $2,000 in cash was gone from it. An evidence technician took photos and prints.
Taking a taxi
A KOAM taxi was stolen from its spot in the 5000 block of N. Clark St. between 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, and 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3. The 2001 blue and white Ford had Illinois plate 3375TX. |

Fraud
A Lincoln Park man told police that someone altered his check #1379, changing the recipient’s name as well as the amount, then cashing the check for a loss
of $135.
Here's the skinny
A man 5’10” and 160 lb. managed to squeeze through a CTA turnstile at the Wilson station at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3. He then attempted to board the train but was arrested. At the same station later that day, a man, 5’8” and 150 lb. followed very closely behind a paying customer in order to get through the turnstile on the same turn. He was also arrested.
Credit card fraud
On Dec. 30 a man lost his wallet at Broadway and Fullerton Ave. When he called to cancel his credit cards, he found that some unauthorized charges had been made Dec. 31.
Financial exploitation of elderly
An 89-year-old Lake View woman was scammed of most of her savings by her best friend’s son, according to police reports. The woman took the offender to Bank One intending to sign him onto her checking account only. While there, he tricked her into signing a power of attorney. He then signed himself onto all of her accounts: checking, savings, and stock. Over the course of a year the offender depleted $80,000 from her accounts, and also used her Visa and ATM cards.
The offender arranged for the victim’s mail to be forwarded to his house, so she was unaware of the activity in her accounts. He opened a trust fund of $6,900 that was unauthorized. In addition, he and his mother stole all the property from the victim’s home in Arizona when she moved to Chicago.
Electronics & jewelry
In the 600 block of W. Aldine Ave., a burglar struck between 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, and 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1. He lifted a screen and broke a window to enter the rear of the house, then collected loot and exited via the rear door. Taken were two TVs, a laptop, a Palm Pilot, 15 DVDs, antique rings and necklaces, and $7,000 in cash.
Bang! Then burgle
Between 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, and 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, a burglar kicked in the rear door of an apartment in the 900 block of W. Waveland Ave. He took a DVD player and a remote, 30 DVDs, 20 CDs, a checkbook, car keys, a wallet with credit cards, and a leather bag. |
Burglar spotted in window flees, returns, gets arrested
After burglarizing five business offices within one building in the 4800 block of N. Broadway, a suspect loaded with loot was apprehended by police. At 8:05 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, a tenant saw the burglar in a second floor window, alerted police, and let them into the building. The witness told police that the offender, a black man wearing a red hat, had fled out the rear door onto Lawrence Ave. Police toured the area and spotted the suspect returning to the site; the witness identified him. When police attempted to stop the offender; he tried to flee but was placed into custody and transported to the 20th District.
The suspect was in possession of numerous items missing from the five ransacked offices, whose doors were visibly forced open. He had a digital camera, memory cards for it, an I-Pod mini, two laptops, a canvas bag, a "security token," $107 mostly in coins, two portable CD players, two screwdrivers, a coin holder, a garage opener, keys, a backpack, two pairs of gloves, two hats, a coat, a man’s watch, earrings, a travel charger, a purse, a flashlight, a pair of metal calipers, two sets of headphones and a boxed figurine of Alice the Anemone.
One of the offices had a video camera that recorded the offender’s actions.
Later that same morning, police were called to the 1100 block of W. Catalpa Ave., the scene of an early morning theft. Someone had entered a garage and broken into four vehicles, taking goods worth over $300 total. The building had a video camera that captured the offender; police recognized him as the same suspect just arrested on Broadway.
The offender’s court date is Jan. 13 in Br. 42-2.
Three males arrested after gang robbery
Nine or ten people were involved in an armed robbery in the 1100 block of W. Winona St. on Thursday, Dec. 29. At 6:40 p.m. the crowd swarmed around the victim, a Hispanic man, saying, “What’s up, nigger?” He said, “ I don’t know you.” At this point an offender wearing a fur coat struck him in the face with a closed fist, then pulled out a handgun and used it to strike the victim in the head and face. During the battery a different offender reached into the victim’s pocket and removed a wallet that contained $200, IDs, a Medicare card, etc. Gang slogans were shouted.
The offenders scattered. The victim flagged down a man who called police; responding officers summoned an ambulance to transport the victim to Weiss Hospital. They sent a flash message, and a different beat picked up three suspects. The victim made a positive identification. Those arrested were ages 15, 17, and 20. |
