WORDSFest (formerly WORDS) is Chicago's first urban arts festival. It features over 35 artists and performance groups in poetry, sketch comedy, hip-hop, music and dance. The popular annual Black History month show produced by the Second City Outreach & Diversity Program culminates its four year history by expanding the WORDS community into an annual festival with a stellar line up of performers.
Up to 20 performers—including seven African American sketch comedy troupes—will be showcased in classic WORDS scenes, improv, rap battles, solo performances, original poetry, music and an all female line up on scheduled nights. Artists and performance groups include: HBO Def poet Kevin Coval, International Songstress Award winner Ugochi, sketch comedy by Straight & Nappy, kevINda, Pimprov, and original music by Chicago emcee Jeff Baraka and Motep.
WORDSFest will also feature a free WORDSFest Panel at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, sharing behind the scene stories and the making of the WORDS community; and a WORDSFest Workshop on at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, where artists teach participants how to create and develop material into performance.
Tickets for WORDSFest are $15 and four-night show passes are $40. Call (773) 327-5252 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. |
