New voting system
The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners will conduct a demonstration of its new dual voting system at various senior sites. Voters will use the system for the first time in the March 21 Primary Election. The demonstration will be held: Jan. 26, 10 a.m., Central West Region Senior Center, 2102 W. Ogden Ave.; Jan. 27, 9 a.m., Northwest Region Senior Center, 3160 N. Milwaukee Ave.; and Jan. 27, 9:15 a.m., Northeast (Levy) Senior Center, 2019 W. ESL classes
The Albany Park Community Center, 3403 W. Lawrence Ave., has immediate openings for individuals who wish to take English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in the afternoon. Sacred Heart honors surgeons
Sacred Heart Schools has announced the recipients of the Third Annual Sacred Heart Schools Goal Award: Dr. Carl L. Backer and Dr. Constantine Mavroudis of Children’s Memorial Hospital. The Awards will be presented at L’Esprit de Sacre Coeur, a benefit dinner-dance on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Aragon Ballroom.

Q/A Open House & Tour
To celebrate Catholic Schools Week, the public is cordially invited to an Open House and Informational Tour of the Queen of Angels School, 4520 N. Western Ave., on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 10 to 10:30 a.m., with coffee to follow. The Associates Board of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation invites you to "Karaoke for a Cure" on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Goose Island, 3535 N. Clark St. Rock out to your favorites with a live band and enjoy a full open bar. Also, get there early to take part in the "best rock star of the night" contest, as the winner will take home a cash prize. There is a $50 cover at the door. Visit a Catholic Schools Week Open House on Sunday, Jan. 29, beginning promptly after 10 a.m. Mass, at St. Benedict's Elementary School, 3920 N. Leavitt St. Meet with the principal, Rachel Gemo, and tour the elementary school. The teachers will be hosting presentations in their classrooms to give you a first-hand view of the school. Bowl-a-thon to help Lawrence Hall
Lawrence Hall Youth Services (LHYS), one of Illinois' most prominent child welfare agencies, will hold its second annual Bowl-a-thon to raise awareness of Lawrence Hall's impact and services. The date is Monday, Feb. 6, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the location is 10 PIN, 330 N. State St. The Entry Fee is $100 per individual or $500 per team of five. (This includes lane fees, shoe rental, food and beverages.)
Lawrence Hall Youth Services is a child welfare agency that treats, educates and provides a home for severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children who have no place else to turn. Lawrence Hall is daily working with over 500 boys and girls through a Therapeutic Day School, Residential Treatment Program, foster care, and Supervised Independent Living Program.

Joffrey Ballet: 'Romeo and Juliet'
The Joffrey Ballet will present John Cranko’s spellbinding, full evening "Romeo and Juliet," featuring the rich score by Sergei Prokofiev, in nine performances only, Feb. 15-26 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress Pkwy. For the third season, live orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Chicago Sinfonietta (the official orchestra of The Joffrey Ballet), under the baton of the Joffrey’s music director and principal conductor, Dr. Leslie B. Dunner.
Cranko’s "Romeo and Juliet" is one of Joffrey Ballet’s most romantic and sumptuous productions, capturing every detail of the play from its regal masked ball to the harsh clang of mortal swordplay. The vividly etched characters, breathtaking choreography and unforgettable pageantry bring this tragedy to life. The magnificent original Jurgen Rose sets and costumes enhance the action of the ballet while complementing the choreography.

Romantic winter gala
The 11th annual Sweetheart Dinner Dance will be held Friday, Feb. 3, at the Drake Hotel to benefit the Children’s Medical Research Foundation.
This premier event begins at 7 p.m. and features a Champagne cocktail reception, a 4-course dinner in the Gold Coast Room, dancing to the music of the Michael Lerich Orchestra, and a silent auction. Attire is black tie optional. Tickets are $200 per person; call (708) 784-0631.
The Children’s Medical Research Foundation is a not-for-profit organization inspired by hometown sweetheart Kirby Wilson of Western Springs. Proceeds from the Sweetheart Dinner Dance will support and expand medical research seeking a cure for San Filippo Syndrome and other children’s neuro-genetic disorders.

Performance art

Luther College Nordic Choir

Center for Older Adults
The Center for Older Adults (COA) will mix live hot jazz with a cool ice cream social for its Winter Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, in Anderson Hall at the Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut St. Retired men and women are invited to come and learn about the center’s program of adult education and exercise. Jazz pianist Willie Picken will be the guest artist at this free event. The center’s membership is open to persons of various faiths.
Midyear memberships will be offered to new comers at the discounted price of $100 for individuals and $150 for couples to cover the program, offered Monday through Friday from February through August.
