CDOA workshops for Medicare beneficiaries

Commissioner Anna L. Willis has announced that for the next couple of months, the Chicago Department on Aging (CDOA) will host informational workshops, with the goal of helping thousands of senior citizens who will be dropped from United HealthCare’s Medicare Plus Choice, an expanded healthcare insurance plan. CDOA Information and Assistant and Red Tape Cutter program staff have been trained to provide information needed to help seniors explore healthcare alternatives.

The community-based healthcare workshops are a collaborative effort between the CDOA and the Illinois Department of Insurance (SHIP). The workshops are free to Chicago residents, age 60 and older.

Beginning Jan. 1, United Healthcare HMO will withdraw coverage from the Medicare market in Chicago and Cook County. As a result, approximately 33,000 older adults will be forced to make changes to their current healthcare plan.

“Choosing a healthcare plan can be both intimidating and confusing for older adults,” explains Commissioner Wills. “It is our effort to help educate them about the many plans that are available, and help guide them through the maze of selecting another healthcare insurance.”

For more information about the healthcare workshops, call the CDOA at (312) 744-4016.

Healthcare workshops will be held on the following dates: Northeast Levy Senior Center, 2019 W. Lawrence Ave., Friday, Nov. 16, 10:30 a.m.-noon.; and Renaissance Center, first floor, Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St., Saturday, Dec. 8, 10:30 a.m.-noon.
