Two String Quartets…
The critically acclaimed Vermeer String Quartet will share the stage with their former students, the Arianna String Quartet, as they perform “Octet, op. 20 in e-flat major” by Felix Mendelssohn at North Park University at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Theirs is the second performance of the 25th Anniversary Season of “Chamber Music at North Park.” A free pre-concert lecture will provide context for the performance from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. This pre-concert conversation will be lead by Marc Johnson, cellist, and Richard Young, violinist, of the Vermeer String Quartet. Also, immediately following the performance, join Vermeer and Arianna for a free “Meet the Artists” reception. The Feb. 11 lecture, concert, and reception will be held in Anderson Hall Chapel (corner of Foster and Spaulding avenues), on the campus of North Park University, 3225 W. 'Polka Uber Alles'
To celebrate their over-the-top “Polka Uber Alles,” The Polkaholics will host a special CD release party. On Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10 p.m., The Polkaholics will bring their “insane brand of merriment” to Martyr’s, 3855 N. Lincoln Ave., for a "polkariffic" good time-and a chance to win a brand new guitar. With “Polka Uber Alles,” The Polkaholics continue to push the polka envelope featuring their own lederhosen-fringed anthems (“Pimps of Polka," “Beer, Broads, & Brats”), along with inimitable versions of Chicago Polish polka classics (“Stella at the Wheel Polka”) and German oompah-pah favorites (“Let's Kill Two Beers with one Stein”). Mix in a tribute to fine polka cuisine (“Sauerkraut is Sweet”) and homage to the night they brought polka to Chicago’s premier bastion of rock (“Polka at the Metro”). Ravenswood Covenant Seniors
The Ravenswood Covenant Seniors invite you to join them for some of their upcoming meetings and outings which are held Fridays at 11 a.m. at 4900 N. Damen Ave. Bring your own bag lunch for regular meetings and enjoy interesting programs and live entertainment for only $3 per meeting, which covers the cost of the entertainment, coffee, tea and miscellaneous expenses.

Try new voting equipment
In preparation for the March primary, voters will get a first-hand look at new voting equipment during a Voter Demonstration Day on Saturday, Feb. 11. Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office and the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners will deploy optical scan ballets and touch-screen machines at two Jewel stores, 1210 N. Clark St. and 5516 N. Clark St. Voters can try the new equipment from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

'King Lear' at Revere
A group of veteran actors and fresh talent will present William Shakespeare's "King Lear," a tragedy of love, power, deception and loss, on Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 16-18, at Revere Park, 2509 W. The story is a tragedy that is 400 years old this year. A rich powerful old King Lear (Tom McKay) abdicates, divides his kingdom, exiles his honest counselor Kent, and disowns his favorite daughter, Cordelia. He is turned out into the cold, betrayed by his wicked daughters, Goneril and Regan, and driven into madness. A terrible storm rains torrents and the poverty of the people is revealed. The loyal Gloucester trusts the wrong choice of two sons. He is tortured, blinded, and cast upon a journey through despair yet towards deeper understanding.
The ensemble includes Brian Baum, Brandon Baisden, Nathan Bennett, Harold LeBoyer, Allyson Kennis, Stacy Schneider, Gina Reynolds, Cory Aiello, Todd Aiello, Avril Warren, Lindsey MaCallister, Mira Marinova, Tom McKay and LeeAnn Zahart as the Fool. Park District drama instructor Kevin P. McSweeney is the director and the assistant director is Abby P. Girdauskas.

Rembrandt Chamber Players
The Rembrandt Chamber Players (RCP) continues its 16th Season with their third subscription concert, Treeos, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the Lyon and Healy Hall, 168 N. Ogden Ave. This program of trios honors Mozart’s 250th birthday with his “Kegelstatt Trio in E Flat, K. 498" for clarinet, viola and piano. Explore the poetic musical landscape of American composer Jennifer Higdon’s "wissahickon poeTrees" for flute, clarinet, strings, piano and percussion. CSO violinist Yuan-Qing Yu brings her artistry to the fore in the spectacular Tchaikovsky "Piano Trio in a minor, Op.50" for piano, violin and cello to complete the program.
RCP musicians Sandra Morgan, flute; Robert Morgan, oboe; J. Lawrie Bloom, clarinet; David Schrader, piano; Keith Conant, viola; Barbara Haffner, cello; and Collins Trier, bass, will be joined by guest artists Elena Abend, piano; Michael Burritt, percussion; and Yuan-Qing Yu, violin.

Haymarket Center Workshops
Haymarket Center’s 2006 Spring Workshop Series will kick off with “Prostitution and Substance Abuse” Saturday, Feb. 18, starting at 9 a.m. All five of the workshops will be held at Haymarket’s conference center, 124 N. Sangamon St. Future workshops will highlight “Men’s Issues in Treatment and Recovery” (March 4); Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention (March 18); “Art Therapy” (April 8); and “Understanding the Grieving Process” (April 22). Five Continuing Education Units can be earned for each workshop.
Pre-registration is required. The cost is $95 per workshop, with certain discounts. Lunch and continental breakfasts are included. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Workshops conclude at 2:30 p.m.

Woman’s Heart Day Health Fair
A varied day of programs has been planned for the National Woman’s Heart Day Health Fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in the lobby of the Merchandise Mart. The Chicago chapter of the Sister to Sister: Everyone Has a Heart Foundation, Inc. has organized panel discussions on such topics as Myths of Women and Heart Disease, A Woman’s Checklist for Health Maintenance, Less Traditional Risk Factors, Encouraging Our Daughters to Eat Healthy from a Young Age, and Alzheimer’s Disease and the Heart.
The free on-site heart screenings consist of a risk assessment questionnaire, Body Mass Index and waist circumference check, blood pressure check, and a non-fasting blood test to determine cholesterol, CRP and glucose levels with on-the-spot screening results. Solo exhibition

Benefit for NAMI
NAMI of Greater Chicago (formerly the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Greater Chicago) will celebrate 27 years of service to the Chicago community at its annual benefit fundraiser, Light the Darkness, on Thursday, March 2, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal Ballroom, West Tower, 151 East Wacker Dr. Cocktails are at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. There will be a silent and live auction, raffle, and dancing to the music of the Rubato Jazz Ensemble. Skate Park Meeting
