More cops to patrol schools

After three students were wounded near Schurz High School earlier this month in a gang-related incident, the Chicago Police Department has decided to deploy more officers to schools troubled by gang activity. The heaviest presence of police will be at the beginning and the end of each school day.

Dog park licenses required soon

Dog owners can now visit participating vets to obtain—for $5—the Cook County dog permit needed beginning March 1 to use any of the City's 10 dog parks. The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control seeks to ensure the health of animals in dog-friendly areas. The dogs must be dewormed and must have current vaccinations for distemper, hepatitis, para-influenza, parvovirus and Bordetella.
Each dog will wear a registration tag on its collar, while the owner will carry a paper permit. Violators may be fined up to $500. The permit will be good through 2006.

Inter-American Magnet School may move

Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital may buy the property housing the Inter-American Magnet School from the Chicago Public Schools for $25 million. The 2.3 acre site at 919 W. Barry Ave. houses a dilapidated structure that would be torn down. The school program would be moved to LeMoyne School, 851 W. Waveland Ave. Some parents at the Inter-American Magnet School oppose the plan and would rather move the program into an empty Catholic school or an immigrant neighborhood.
