In response to a surge in patient volume, Swedish Covenant Hospital has announced plans to expand and renovate its emergency department. Construction, which will begin in March, will add 11,000 sq. ft., nearly doubling the current space. Target completion date is spring 2007.
With patient visits exceeding 40,000 annually and a 117 percent increase in ambulance runs from 2003 to 2004, the hospital identified a strong need to grow to accommodate current patient levels and prepare for future needs. Swedish Covenant attributes the large increase in its patient load, in part, to the closure of nearby Ravenswood and Edgewater hospitals and their emergency rooms.
The expansion will feature an enhanced waiting area, 10 additional examination rooms, an enlarged patient triage area, and decor that creates a more homelike atmosphere. The unit also will be designed for protection against possible airborne pathogens.
" We are here to serve the most critical needs of the community, and the larger renovated emergency department reflects our ongoing commitment to provide residents the highest quality healthcare, " said Mark Newton, president and chief executive office of Swedish Covenant Hospital.
The hospital's emergency unit, located at 2739 W. Foster Ave., will remain open during the $10 million project. Anderson Mikos Architects, Ltd., is handling design and construction.

Campaign Launch
The hospital also will launch a capital campaign to help underwrite the cost of the expanded, state-of-the art emergency department. Monies collected through annual gifts, special events and the hospital's annual gala will be earmarked for the project.
"We will work with current donors and reach out to other publics to help fund the emergency department expansion, " explained Newton.
