Report discrimination in 20 languages

The Chicago Commission on Human Relations (CCHR), through the work of its Advisory Council on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, has translated information about discrimination complaints into 19 languages, announced CCHR Chairman Clarence N. Wood. The CCHR receives, investigates, conciliates, and adjudicates certain complaints of discrimination involving employment, housing, and public accommodations.

“Our strength is in diversity, and the city’s future depends on promoting respect for diversity,” stated Wood. “The expanded outreach, which the new translations represent, brings us one step closer to a bias-free Chicago. The Commission urges Chicago residents and visitors to come forward if they believe they have been discriminated against,” Wood concluded.

The Commission has a brief “Adjudication Fact Sheet” which explains the exact types of cases it may accept, the stages of the adjudication process, and the type of relief which a complaining party may receive. This information is now available in the following languages besides English: Amharic, Arabic, Assyrian, Bosnian, Chinese, Cambodian, Estonian, French, Hindi, Korean, Laotian, Latvian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Persons who need interpreters to speak to CCHR staff should either contact the Commission at least a week ahead of time so that the Commission can hire an interpreter or those persons should bring their own interpreters.

Interested individuals and organizations may request Fact Sheets by calling (312) 744-4111, TTY: (312) 744-1088 and specifying the language(s) of interest.
