'The Christmas Schooner' sails for its seventh voyage

Over the last six seasons, John Reeger and Julie Shannon’s holiday musical “The Christmas Schooner” has become one of Chicago’s favorite home-grown holiday traditions, loved by family members of all ages. It is a stirring story, filled with the pioneering spirit of families that braved the icy waters of Lake Michigan to continue the traditions of their childhood. Full of glorious music, charming dances, and the lively spirit of the sailing crew of The Molly Doone, “The Christmas Schooner” is a timely and stirring reminder of the value of family, the importance of tradition, and our obligation to celebrate the living while honoring our ancestors.

This year’s production of “The Christmas Schooner” is directed by Phil Gigante, who has served as the Captain of The Molly Doone for the last several seasons. Scott Williams returns as musical director, and the traditional designs are by Jackie Penrod (set), Eric Appleton (light) and Elizabeth Shaffer (costumes).

Taking his place behind the ship’s wheel is Karl Sean Hamilton, making his Bailiwick debut, and playing opposite Susan A. Miller, with her portrayal of Alma Stossel. Brendon Martin returns to play young Karl for the third year coupled with Robert Maher taking on the role of his grandfather, Gustav. Others in the ensemble include returning cast members Jason Bowen as first mate Steve and Gretchen Goodrich as Cousin Martha. New to the Schooner cast this year are Bailiwick regulars Bailey Boudreau as Older Karl, Don Shell as Oscar, Rebecca Prescott as Enid, and Giovanna Zito as Mary Claire Doherty. Making their Bailiwick debuts are Tom Shea as Rudy, Justine Von Durant as Olive, and Angie Laurin as Rose.
