Mayor Daley’s Grocery Store Inspection Task Force in December charged 18 stores with multiple consumer, health and sanitation violations. “Many of the stores were inspected as a result of complaints received by the Department of Consumer Services,” Daley said.
If convicted of the charges the store owner could be fined as much as $1000 for each health code violation and $500 for each consumer violation. Store area that were closed will be allowed to reopen after correcting the problems and passing reinspection. Urban Markets, 458 W. Dickens Ave., was charged with 11 consumer and health violations that included allegedly offering for sale outdated merchandise, failing to properly elevate food off of the floor, improper pest control, an unsanitary refrigerator, unsanitary floors and counter tops, unsanitary meat processing equipment, failing to repair a hole in the wall, and inadequate ventilation.
La Baguette Bakery, 5712 N. Clark St., was charged with six consumer and health violations that included allegedly failing to have the prices marked on merchandise, failing to properly cover food products on display, and improper pest control.
Clark Food Mart, 5910 N. Clark St., was charged with six consumer and health violations that included allegedly offering for sale outdated merchandise, unsanitary shelves, and failing to remove clutter from underneath the sink.
Diversey Pantry, 702 W. Diversey Ave., was charged with seven consumer and health violations that included allegedly offering for sale outdated merchandise, failing to properly elevate food off of the floor, unsanitary counter tops, failing to install a thermometer in the meat cooler, and failing to remove clutter from the rear storage area.
7-Eleven, 5623 N. Clark St., was charged with seven consumer and health violations that included allegedly overcharging, failing to have the prices marked on merchandise, failing to properly elevate food off of the floor, an unsanitary washroom, an unsanitary refrigerator, failing to install thermometers in the cooling units, and unsanitary floors.
