Community developers to be honored February 5th

Outstanding community developers, neighborhood organizations and architects that have contributed the most to the revitalization of Chicago’s neighborhoods during the past year will be honored at the eighth annual Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards (CNDA) on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Palmer House Hilton.

The event, which was originally created by Local Initiatives Support Corporation/Chicago to showcase the creativity and robust activity in neighborhood redevelopment, has become one of the most important events for Chicago’s architectural, community development and banking communities, drawing sponsorship from a wide variety of corporations and attracting more than 1,200 people for the awards ceremony and accompanying program.

The awards will be presented at a formal program that begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Grand/State Ballroom. This year’s ceremony is being presided over by Howard Pizer, executive vice president of the United Center, which for more than a decade has partnered with nearby community organizations to help revitalize the Near West Side.

The theme of this year’s program is “Expressions: Arts, Culture and Community Building,” an exploration of culture as an expression and building block of community renewal. A panel discussion on the topic, led by Nick Rabkin, executive director of Columbia College Center for Art Policy, and featuring Richard Owen Geer, director of community-development theater projects in Uptown, and Raul Raymundo, executive director of The Resurrection Project on the Near Southwest Side, will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. immediately preceding the awards presentation.

A reception will follow the awards ceremony. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets for the 2002 CNDA are $45 in advance and $50 at the door. To obtain tickets or for further information, call the LISC/Chicago ticket hotline at (312) 385-4803.
