As part of its fundraising campaign to pay for the new children’s playground to be built in Wicker Park, the Park’s Advisory Council has launched its first Web site— www.mywickerpark.org.
The renaissance under way in Wicker Park has seen young families return to the area, and new facilities are desired to meet the needs of these families. To support the needs of the changing Wicker Park community, four local moms spearheaded the reformation of the Wicker Park Advisory Council early in 2001, and there’s been nothing but action since as the Council works with the Park District to better the park. Already, new fencing has been installed around the park, a new dog run created, and the historic fountain rebuilt. And there are a record number of classes—and attendees—at the Wicker Park Field House.
Late last year the Wicker Park Advisory Council proposed to the City of Chicago Park District that the most important project for Wicker Park would be the installation of a new playground. This new and expanded playground would provide the foundation for the revitalization of the remainder of the park. The Park District agreed and initial designs for the new playground have already been completed, and the district is in the process of scheduling the construction timetable.
To complete the new playground, the Advisory Council’s goal is to raise $100,000. Some of this money will come from local and state government sources, and the rest from local residents and businesses.
