City to help laid-off Chicagoans

>The Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development (MOWD) is helping laid-off Chicagoans find new jobs by providing specialized re-employment and retraining services at locations throughout the city.

Through Mayor Daley’s WorkNet Chicago, MOWD provides laid-off Chicagoans services such as job search assistance and placement opportunities. MOWD also offers retraining for individuals who require skills upgrading or desire a new occupation.

“Employees affected by layoffs can begin using our services immediately and absolutely free of charge,” explained Workforce Commissioner Jackie Edens. “Our goal is to help them return to the workforce as swiftly and smoothly as possible.”

MOWD has a proven track record of helping the victims of layoffs, assisting thousands of Montgomery Ward employees when the company closed its doors in December 2000 and working with employees at Brach’s Confections, Inc. as the West Side candy manufacturer continues its two-year phased shutdown.

MOWD offers specialized employment and training services at five One-Stop Career Centers and 33 affiliate agencies located throughout the city. Individuals interested in MOWD services should call (312) 746-7777 or visit www.cityofchicago.org/WorkforceDevelopment/.
