In commemoration of May as National Older Americans Month, Chicago residents age 60 and older may attend the Chicago Department on Aging’s annual citywide Senior Citizens Conference on Wednesday, May 15, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the McCormick Place, Lakeside Center.
Under the banner theme “Hearth and Home: Happy, Healthy and Safe in Your Community,” more than 1,000 senior citizens are expected to attend workshops, have lunch with speakers and entertainment, and browse a resource fair. “I want to commend the Chicago Department on Aging for hosting this conference which will present excellent resources that will enable senior citizens to live more healthy, happy and enriched lives,” said Mayor Daley.
“The focus of our conference is on home life and how seniors can organize, decorate and provide an accessible and safe living environment,” explains CDOA Commissioner Anna L. Willis.
In addition to a resource fair featuring service-providing agencies from the city, state and county, the Conference will feature workshops as follows.
“Home Sweet Home”: Senior citizens will learn tips for decorating on a limited budget.
“A Matter of Balance”: Occupational therapists will demonstrate how seniors can function with limited physical mobility, present tips on increasing activity levels and help senior citizens reduce their fear of falling.
“Aging in Place”: This workshop will focus on a wide variety of home modifications that are available to allow seniors to live more independent, safe and comfortable.
“Smart Spring Cleaning”: This workshop will provide valuable tips on how older adults can reform their living quarters into a safe and organized place to live.
The conference workshops will also be offered in Spanish. Entertainment will be provided by Latin Rhythms with Francisco Rocha and Buddy Butler and Friends.
