DePaul conducts free symphony

The DePaul Symphony Orchestra will present music by Mahler, Strauss and Beethoven at its 26th annual Joseph and Marie Grant Spring Concert Wednesday, May 15. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at Orchestra Hall, 220 S. Michigan Ave.

Under the direction of conductor Cliff Colnot, the orchestra will perform Adagietto from Symphony No. 5 by Mahler, Oboe Concerto in D by Strauss and Symphony No. 3 by Beethoven. The Oboe Concerto will feature as soloist Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) principal oboe Alex Klein, a DePaul School of Music faculty member. Klein played the same piece on the CSO’s recording of the wind concertos by Strauss, which recently won a Grammy Award.

Colnot, a distinguished Chicago composer, arranger and commercial music entrepreneur, celebrates his fifth year as conductor of the DePaul Symphony Orchestra this season. He is the resident conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and principal conductor of the CSO’s MusicNow series. The Chicago Tribune’s Arts & Entertainment critics named Colnot as one of 16 inspirational artists and “Chicagoans of the Year” for 2001, hailing him for his role “as one of the area’s most respected musician-educators.”

General admission seats will be available at no charge. Tickets are available at the Symphony Center box office or by calling (312) 294-3000 (phone orders will incur a service fee).
