Parking garage may earn landmark status

The six-story LaSalle Garage at 615 W. Washington St. began the long process to landmark status at the last meeting of the Commission of Chicago landmarks.

Built in 1918 and added to in 1923, the structure may be the nation’s first multi-level parking garage. Parking in those years was relegated to empty neighborhood lots on the outskirts of the loop, converted horse stables, or the curbside that, in those early days of automobiles, did not have parking meters.

The building is also noted for its architecture. Built by Holabird and Roche, of the famed Chicago School of Architects, the LaSalle’s brick and two-toned terra cotta facade is accentuated with expressive geometric abstractions. Inside, the architects designed an innovative spiral driveway as well as the first elevator system for autos.
