'Defending Myself' uses theatre to address domestic violence

MPAACT, the Ma’at Production Association of Afrikan Centered Theatre, performs Carla Stillwell’s “Defending Myself” through June 2. This passionately dramatic production uses the art of theatre to provide a poignant look at the unspoken power of relationships. From the anticipation of first date flirtations and intense heat to the familiarities of daily routine, “Defending Myself” follows Richard (Robert Hines III) and Aza (China Colston) as their paralleled actions culminate into a physical exploration of the power dynamics of love.

“Defending Myself” runs through Sunday, June 2, with performances on Thursdays ($15) and Fridays ($20) at 8:30 p.m.; Saturdays ($20) at 7:30 p.m.; and Sundays ($20) at 3:30 p.m. Students/seniors pay ($15). “Defending Myself” is performed at the Victory Gardens Theater, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. To order tickets, call the box office at (773) 871-3000. For more information, visit the MPAACT Web site at www.mpaact.org.

“Defending Myself” is MPAACT’s second performance this season. Shepsu Aakhu’s Jeff-nominated “Kosi Dasa” opened MPAACT’s tenth anniversary season.
