Pieces of past prove popular

Architectural Artifacts is expanding its space to include a museum dedicated to Chicago architects at 4345 N. Ravenswood Ave.

The new design features a glass topped atrium and will be supervised by Aria Architects, who planned the addition. Pieces of the Granada theater and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, artifacts from Louis Sullivan buildings, and windows designed by Frank Lloyd Wright will be featured.

The concept of saving pieces of historic buildings became popular in the 60s when a movement to save historic buildings from the wrecking ball failed under the late Mayor Daley’s plan for progress. Richard Nikel spearheaded the movement until his untimely death, when the Chicago Stock Exchange was being demolished and tons of rubble fell on him.
