Police were called to an apartment building in the 1000 block of W. Balmoral Ave. on Tuesday, May 13, for a report of an aggravated assault with a handgun.
When police arrived a 68-year-old female victim and an interpreter from a community center in the neighborhood met them. They were told that during the past few months a dark Hispanic male, clean shaven, in his 20s, 5’6” and 140 lb., neatly dressed in a waist length jacket, red T-shirt, and blue jeans, had repeatedly assaulted the victim. The police were also told that the offender’s black hair had a distinctive blond streak down the right side.
The incidents started in January when the woman’s 42-year-old son was a victim of a robbery. He was returning home from work when a subject of the same description approached him in the hallway and demanded his wallet. The son managed to grab the offender’s jacket during the robbery. He kept the jacket containing miscellaneous identification and gave it to police on the date of the report.
Since the robbery an unknown male matching the mother’s description has been knocking on the mother’s door stating that he had a gun and demanding entry into the apartment. The mother let the offender into the apartment because she was afraid of being shot. The offender would search the apartment but never took anything. This occurred four more times.
On the date of the report, the offender returned again and demanded entry but this time the victim shouted, “Police,” and did not allow him entry. The victim looked through the spy hole in the apartment’s door and observed the offender holding a handgun. The victim called 911 but because of the language barrier, no formal report was made.
The interpreter was summoned and she advised the victim to call the police again so she could describe the crimes.
The jacket and IDs of the alleged offender were taken and inventoried as evidence.
