Goodman presents new opera based on 16th century scientist

The Goodman Theatre caps its 2001-2002 season in the Albert with the world premiere of "Galileo Galilei," an opera by Philip Glass, featuring a libretto by Mary Zimmerman with Philip Glass and Arnold Weinstein, and directed by Tony award winner Mary Zimmerman. Depicted in lush, cosmic panoramas, "Galileo Galilei" presents the life of the 16th century scientist whose support of Copernicus' radical hypothesis that the earth revolves around the sun led to a lifetime conviction of heresy. "Galileo Galilei" began previews June 14, and continues for performances through July 21.

Beginning at the end of his life and moving backwards in time, "Galileo Galilei" relays the life story of the famed astronomer who turned humanity's conception of the universe inside out. Appearing as the elder Galileo is tenor John Duykers. In the role of young Galileo is baritone Eugene Perry.

Tickets for "Galileo Galilei" range from $35 to $50. Tickets may be purchased at the Goodman Theatre Box Office, located at 170 N. Dearborn St., or may be charged by phone at (312) 443-3800.
