Summer Cycle and Safety Fest features music too

Nelson Gill, acclaimed singer and songwriter, will be performing at the 43rd Ward Summer Cycle and Safety Fest at Lincoln Park High School, 2001 N. Orchard St., Saturday, June 29. Gill's eclectic music has thrilled audiences around the world, from his home country of Belize to right here in Chicago at events including Taste of Chicago, Ravinia Summer Festival and Navy Pier.

His Central American roots heavily influence Gill's musical style, which is filled with Caribbean rhythms such as Reggae, Merengue, and Calypso. These upbeat rhythms and inspiring lyrics continue to delight children and adults alike.

Although Gill has a Masters of Education in Early Childhood Development, it was his experience as a pre-school teacher which encouraged him to write music for children. He turns topics like math and school into rousing, foot-stomping tunes that children and their parents cannot help but love. "His background with children makes Nelson a perfect fit for the Safety Fair," says Michael Thomas, owner of the children's shoe store Piggy Toes and sponsor of Gill's show. "And his Caribbean music is great for the summertime."

Gill will be a main attraction at the SafetyFest which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 29, with an hour long bike tour led by Ald. Vi Daley (43rd) followed by the safety party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The party includes a bike rodeo, Radio Disney, Wizard of Oz characters and safety tips. The first 100 kids at the party will get a free bike helmet and be eligible for a bike raffle.

The Fest is sponsored by several Lincoln Park businesses including Children's Memorial Hospital, the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce, Emerald City, Piggy Toes, All Our Children, Mark Brown Photography, First American Bank, Kaput Kapot, Thomas Ward Insurance and Kozy's Cyclery.
