Construction will begin approximately Aug. 1 on the renovation of Giddings Plaza and the Lincoln Square Mall, and the work should be finished prior to Thanksgiving.
Phase 1: The concrete, curbed bump outs at the north, center and south ends of the mall will be removed and asphalt installed. This will facilitate vehicular traffic flow on Lincoln Ave. during later stages. The new sidewalk will be installed along the plaza side of Café Selmarie. Parking will remain available in all other areas of the mall.
Phase 2: Sidewalk removal and replacement will begin on the west side of Lincoln Ave., from Leland Ave. to the plaza. There will be "no parking/no standing" on the east side of that portion of the street to accommodate the traffic lane. All large truck deliveries will need to be made off of the alley. A temporary zone will be available at the other side of the mall for two vans or small trucks. This work will begin after the Car Show (to be held on Aug. 11).
Phase 3:Sidewalk removal and replacement will begin on the west side of Lincoln Ave., from Lawrence Ave. to the plaza. There will be "no parking/no standing" on the east side of the street to accommodate the traffic lane. All large truck deliveries will need to be made off of the alley. A temporary loading zone will be available at the other side of the mall for two vans or small trucks. Phases 1 through 3 should be completed prior to the start of German Fest (to be held on Sept. 6, 7 and 8.)
Phase 4: The remaining work on Giddings Plaza will begin, including the removal of the existing pavement and the installation of pavers, lighting, benches, trees, stage area and flowerbeds. Once this phase begins, the plaza will be closed until all work is completed. (The new sidewalk along Café Selmarie will remain open.) This phase will begin immediately after German Fest.
Phase 5: Sidewalk removal and replacement will begin on the east side of Lincoln Ave., from Lawrence Ave. to the plaza. There will be "no parking/no standing" on the west side of the street to accommodate the traffic lane. All large truck deliveries will need to be made off of the alley. A temporary loading zone will be available at the other side of the mall for two vans or small trucks.
Phase 6: Sidewalk removal and replacement will begin on the east side of Lincoln Ave., from Leland Ave. to the plaza. There will be "no parking/no standing" on the west side of the street to accommodate the traffic lane. All large truck deliveries will need to be made off of the alley. A temporary loading zone will be available at the other side of the mall for two vans or small trucks. To facilitate the installation of the arches and the street pavers, Lincoln Ave. will be closed to through traffic for short periods of time. The contractor will provide businesses with as much notice as possible regarding these closures.
The sidewalks will be replaced at no cost to the business or property owners. In addition, new tree pits will be added wherever feasible and trees will be planted, again at no cost to the business or property owner.
"As with any project of this magnitude, there will be dust, noise, parking restrictions and some traffic delays," said Ald. Gene Schulter (47th). "Please notify your customers and any delivery services of the upcoming parking restrictions on Lincoln Avenue. It would be regrettable if anyone was ticketed and/or towed."
