Noted mathematician to join Mid-East peace delegation

Brayton Gray, professor of mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will travel in the Mid-East as part of a Christian Peacemakers Team (CPT) delegation from July 25 to August 6. Professor Gray believes that "the actions of the current Israeli Government severely damage the security of Israel and the violent reactions by some Palestinians are wrong and counter-productive." As part of the team of 15 peacemakers, he will meet with Israeli and Palestinian peace and human rights workers and work to document the daily situations of families in the Hebron and Ramallah areas who have been suffering under the escalation of violence over the past months. It is especially important at this time, when peace seems more elusive than ever, that the people suffering from violence know that they are not alone, he said.

The Christian Peacemaker Team is a project spawned by Mennonites, Brethren, and Quakers (Religious Society of Friends) to reduce violence and promote the resolution of conflicts through nonviolent means. CPT has maintained a full-time presence in Hebron since June of 1995. In addition to the Mid-East, CPT has sent trained violence-reduction teams to Haiti, Mexico, Chechnya, Bosnia, South Dakota, Washington DC, Richmond, VA, and Ontario, Canada. Professor Gray is a member of the Northside Friends Meeting of Chicago.
