The Mid-North Chapter of the Independent Voters of Illinois and Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO) will host a Town Meeting today from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at 4300 N. Marine Dr. Dick Simpson, author and University of Illinois professor of Political Science and former 44th Ward Alderman, will join Ald. Helen Shiller (46th).
Dick Simpson is an example of one person making a difference. In his first campaign for political office, he surprised political observers and won the aldermanic election despite a well-financed opponent with an army of precinct captains. As an accomplished author, his latest book is “Rogues, Rebels & Rubber Stamps—The Politics of the Chicago City Council from 1883 to the Present.” Mr. Simpson founded the Independent Precinct Organization, which merged with the Independent Voters of Illinois in 1979.
Helen Shiller has been Alderman since April 1987 and has sponsored and/or lobbied for many legislative acts aimed at improving the quality of life for residents of her ward and the entire city. Issues that Ms. Shiller has addressed for the City of Chicago and the 46th Ward are AIDS, domestic violence, human rights, and Tax Increment Financing (TIF). Ms. Shiller is currently enrolled in DePaul University’s School for New Learning’s Master’s Program where her focus is public policy.
Chapter hosts Karen Boehning, second term chairman, and Tom Sharpe, vice-chair, will join Shiller and Simpson in presenting an informative evening which will answer nuts and bolts questions about ward boundaries, issues affecting the community, election information and voter registration. The Mid-North IVI-IPO Chapter encompasses the 44th, 46th and 47th Wards.
This past year public awareness has been heightened regarding public safety, financial security and government corruption. These issues have led many Americans to re-examine their political affiliations and renew their personal commitment to participate in a political process.
According to Ms. Boehning, “This event is a first in a series that will inspire and encourage community members to think outside the political box, and to participate in an old-fashioned neighborhood discussion of today’s issues featuring Shiller & Simpson, Chicago’s independent political pioneers.”
Family members, friends and neighbors are encouraged to attend. Reservations are requested as space is limited; please call (773) 477-8822. |
