Preservation
snapshots series
Stephen Sennott, assistant dean for Academic Affairs at the College of Architecture at IIT, will discuss some predictable and unpredictable buildings that characterize the architectural history of Illinois, from global cities to prairie towns, on Sept. 19, at 12:15 p.m.
An architectural historian and author of “Buildings of Illinois” (forthcoming), Sennott will discuss a representative sample of high-style and vernacular buildings erected across Illinois for inclusion in this statewide history of Illinois architecture. Whether a gas station or courthouse, silo or skyscraper, each example represents a significant facet of Illinois history, raising questions about preservation at the local and regional level.
The Preservation Snapshots series provides a monthly review of preservation issues with experts presenting talks on a specific subject. Question and answer sessions will follow each talk. The series takes place at the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St., Claudia Cassidy Theater, on the third Thursday of every month at 12:15 p.m.
The public is invited to attend; you need not be a member of LPCI to participate. Admission is free. Bring your own brown-bag lunch.
Grand opening:
Franceschi Gallery
Franceschi Gallery, a new addition to the thriving Wicker Park - Bucktown art scene, announces its grand opening exhibition, “Theme & Variations,” a group show of paintings, photography and sculpture featuring Robert Amft. The exhibition runs through Oct. 24, and is part of the annual Around the Coyote Festival.
Amft’s larger than life paintings, direct quotations from works by Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Seurat and others, give a different perspective on classic painting. One such painting is a new rendition of the Mona Lisa, complete with a cigarette dangling from her mouth. For his sculpture Amft finds inspiration in “junk”: hardware gadgets, scrap iron, garden tools and wooden table legs. This exhibition includes whimsical sculptures and six ft. high paintings.
Franceschi Gallery is located at 1478 N. Milwaukee Ave. For further information, call (773) 328-8901.
