Arthur Montelongo, 26, of the 2200 block of N. Campbell Ave., was fatally wounded on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in an alley of the 2400 block of W. Leland Ave. at approximately 9:09 p.m.
The body was taken to the Cook County morgue. The medical examiner identified the body as Montelongo through fingerprints the next day.
Residents near the crime scene heard shouting followed by several reports of a firearm. Police arrived to find the victim without signs of life but called for an ambulance immediately.
Montelongo was shot in the back and then in the head. He staggered a few feet and fell face down on a garage apron.
The bullets came from a small caliber weapon. They pierced a garage door and went through the back of the garage to lodge in a house wall. Another hit the taillight of a parked car in the garage.
The victim had money in his pockets but no identification.
In an effort to identify the victim, police asked residents to view the body. Montelongo was covered by a blanket but pulled back enough to reveal one side of his face. Young men in particular were asked if they knew him. He was dressed, according to one neighbor, in baggy pants and gym shoes.
“Nobody deserves to die like that... he was somebody’s brother, somebody’s son...maybe even somebody’s father,” a resident said.
Other witnesses said that they saw several offenders run to a vehicle and drive away.
