Two neighborhood groups to be recognized for reducing youth crime

The Chicago Council on Urban Affairs will honor two Chicago-based community organizations for their efforts to help reduce youth crime and promote collaborations between diverse immigrant groups at its 23rd Annual Dinner, Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 151 E. Wacker Dr. The award program starts at 7 p.m.
The Music Theatre Workshop (MTW) will receive the juvenile justice award for its creative approach to working with youth in the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. MTW provides a space where incarcerated youth are given an opportunity to address their issues and develop skills that promote a “crime-free lifestyle.”
The Multi-Cultural Youth Project (MCYP) is a collaborative community-based partnership consisting of six different ethnic agencies brought together to implement solutions that address issues of racial, ethnic and cultural tension among immigrant youth in Uptown and Edgewater. MCYP has provided over 850 youth with programs and services ranging from after school activities to counseling to engage youth in the dialogue about immigration public policy.
Close to 300 people are expected to attend the neighborhood awards dinner and applaud the efforts of the Music Theatre Workshop and the Multi-Cultural Youth Project. The award recipient will receive a plaque, be featured in an issue of the Council’s urban affairs magazine, One City, and profiled on the Council’s Web site.
