We run an all-Mac office. However, that doesn't mean we only accept files created on a Mac, but you may have to create and submit a file from your PC software in a more cross-platform compatible format if we're going to use it in the newspaper.
The best solution is to create a PDF (Portable Document Format) file, which is completely cross-platform compatible and has all of its fonts and artwork included in one file.
Scans: Make sure to use the correct (whatever is appropriate) three-letter file extension on any photos (e.g. jpg, gif, bmp, tif) so that we can open the file in Photoshop even if it loses its file-creator association or icon in transmission. Don't use any special characters in filenames and try to make the file name meaningful. Don't use "Inside" as the filename, we know where we work and already have about 1,000 files called "Inside" anyway.
Scanned photos: 300 dpi, at 100% of reproduction size.
Scanned logos and other line-art: 1200 dpi at 100% of reproduction size.
Vector artwork: Adobe Illustrator 8.0 or earlier, or compatible. Vector artwork from Corel Draw and other applications may be acceptable, please call and ask if you have any doubts. Also make sure to use the correct two or three-letter file extension for vector artwork (e.g. eps, ai.)
Editable files: We create most of our in-house artwork with Quark XPress 4.0 for Macintosh. If you send a Windows (PC) version of a Quark XPress file, we will be able to open and edit it but won't have the fonts you used available. Other than that, all requirements for Quark XPress file compatibility apply, and I'm sure if you're an XPress user you're familiar with that. "Collect For Output" and compress the folder/directory you create for your output collection, and send the whole archive plus any fonts used, if they are Macintosh compatible fonts. Send a fax of the layout to use so that we can check the position and appearance of fonts and artwork.
