The $2.5 million renovation of Giddings Plaza and Lincoln Sq. street scaping is in its final days, getting ready for the holiday rush. The construction schedule calls for completion on Wednesday, Nov. 27, to the relief of all who have had to shop or do business in the area since the summer.
The Lincoln Square arches are to arrive on Nov. 15, but that does not mean they will be erected on that date. This will be another construction headache calling for more equipment to do the job. The Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce warns there will be a traffic quagmire when the arches are installed.
The paving bricks are being cut on site for the unique sidewalks and plaza. The grout for the bricks is compressed sand applied with a machine forcing the sand into the cracks. The bricked pavement is impervious to cracks because, unlike contiguous cement sidewalks, the bricks can shift with the earth’s movement. Each brick can support 8,000 pounds per square inch – cement can withstand between four and six thousandpounds per square inch. The brick pavement can easily support the weight of a fully loaded semi-trailer.
Trees will be planted on the east side of Lincoln Ave. and in Giddings Plaza. Forty new planters, 42” in diameter, will be spaced between the light poles.
A one month “punch list” period will begin when construction is completed. During this time, the City, Chamber of Commerce, and property owners will be able to file complaints concerning imperfect work, over-spray on windows or buildings, cracked cement, etc. The contractor will have one month to remedy the situation if the city agrees with the complaint. |
