Recent cutbacks in city services have caused many local chambers of commerce inside Chicago to consider establishing an SSA—Special Service Area. Andersonville and Lincoln Park are the most recent chambers to apply to the city for this taxing district. The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce is now proposing a 48th Ward SSA, serving Broadway and the connecting business streets.
SSAs are set up with specific boundaries and a small, additional property tax is levied within that area. Mayor Daley appoints a set of commissioners, predominantly commercial district property owners, to administer the funds. The funds are spent within the district on activities which improve business.
The Edgewater Chamber has appointed a committee to review the project, chaired by President Tim Harrington, Barr Funeral Home. Other committee members are Jennifer Clark, Loyola University Chicago; Laura Lee, Uptown National Bank; Jim McHale, North Community Bank and Kathy Vellios, MB Financial Bank. |
