An aggravated battery with a knife occurred in the 4100 block of N. Broadway on Monday, Nov. 11, at 4:45 p.m. Arthur Rizzio, 20, of the 2000 block of W. Arthur Ave., and Nicholas DeCamp, 18, of the 1200 block of W. Leland Ave. have been charged with the offense. They are scheduled to appear in Br. 29-2 on Jan. 3.
While on routine patrol of CTA premises, responding officers observed two white males striking a black male. The officers exited their vehicle to intervene. They were seen by the offenders who immediately ran away.
The victim sustained a knife wound to the head and a CFD ambulance was called. The officers pursued the offenders, catching Rizzio while the other offender eluded police. During the chase Rizzio was seen to throw something onto the rooftop of a building.
The victim was taken to Thorek Hospital where he was treated and was listed in good condition. The victim stated that while on the sidewalk with his wife, the offenders approached them. DeCamp looked directly at the victim and said “cotton picker,” and proceeded to strike the victim with his fists. The victim fought back. His wife ran in fear for her safety. Rizzio pulled a knife and slashed the victim.
The CFD was called for assistance and firemen retrieved a 2” long silver handled knife from the rooftop where Rizzio allegedly had thrown it.
Later, the identity of the second offender, DeCamp, became known to police. The offender was located in the 1200 block of W. Leland Ave, where he was arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The information concerning the crime was turned over to the proper department for investigation as a hate crime. |
