St. Benedict?s presents ?Hedda Gabler?

Ina Marlowe, artistic director of the Organic Theater Company (OTC), will direct St. Benedict High School’s fall production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic, “Hedda Gabler.” Why “Hedda Gabler”? “It speaks to the heart,” says Marlowe, whose direction of “A Moon for the Misbegotten” won her a Joseph Jefferson award. Its structure and the quality of the roles lend themselves to a student production. And although it was penned more than a century ago, the play explores themes that concern young adults today—women’s roles, the fear of taking risks, the effects of alcohol, and, most poignantly, relationships between men and women.
The St. Benedict High School cast includes Jeannette Saribekian as Hedda, Wayne Brumgart as Judge Brack, Jon Mavalankar as George Tesman, Paige Miller as Mrs. Elvsted, Sarah Robles as Miss Tesman, Justin Vaughn as Eilbert Lovborg, and Liza Aybar as Berta. Marlowe’s work with St. Ben’s students reflects OTC’s mission to nurture “universal ideas and values through performance, education, and outreach.”
On the heels of her negotiation of the merger of OTC with Touchstone Theatre, the Chicago Tribune named Marlowe one of the Outstanding Chicagoans of 1996. She has also been honored with the distinguished Alumni Award from DePaul University. In addition to the SBHS production of “Hedda Gabler,” Marlowe is currently directing “The Lady from Dubuque” at the OTC.
