A vehicular hijacking occurred on Friday, Jan. 10, at 8:30 p.m. in the 400 block of E. Grand Ave., one block from Navy Pier. The victim, a 27-year-old female, was held captive in her vehicle while the hijacker drove around for ten minutes — then he stopped for a cigarette. The victim seized the moment to escape.
The victim reported to police that while she was removing items from her vehicle, a ‘96 green Toyota Camry, the offender approached her.
“Don’t scream and get into the car,” he ordered. The victim tried to get away but a struggle ensued until the offender hit her on the face with a closed fist. He shoved her into the back of the car between the seats and got into the vehicle. The offender held the victim’s head down and started the car. “Get down and don’t look at me,” the offender said.
“What do you want?” the victim asked.
“Money,” the offender said.
“Let’s go to the cash station,” the victim suggested.
“Where’s your ATM card?” he asked.
“In my purse,” she answered.
The offender looked through the purse but could not find it. He parked the car after driving around for over 10 minutes.
“We could go to Dominick’s,” the victim said.
“Fifty bucks isn’t going to do it,” the offender responded. He put a cigarette in his mouth. He stopped holding the victim in the back seat for a moment to light his cigarette. The victim opened the car door and ran.
The offender was described in a police report as a black male in his 30s, 5’9” and 190 lb., wearing a dark 3/4 length coat, black pants, and black shoes. |
